Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants come in many shapes, sizes, and types. If you are thinking about getting a dental implant, your dentist is going to go over some important information with you to make sure that your implant meets your needs. Your dentist is going to discuss the classes of dental implants as well as the health of your jawbone.

The Types of Dental Implants

The Journal of Implantology discusses two common types of dental implants. The first is called the endosteal implant. This is an implant that is placed directly in the jawbone. An endosteal implant is typically made out of titanium. This metal is then fashioned into a small screw. The screw is then drilled directly into the jawbone, which holds the implant in place.

The other common type of implant is termed subperiosteal. This implant is placed underneath the gum but above the jawbone. Patients with a jaw that might not be able to hold an endosteal implant in place may end up getting a subperiosteal implant instead. While some dentists debate the effectiveness of a subperiosteal implant when compared to an endosteal implant, there are ways to make the jawbone stronger.

The Health of the Jawbone

Because endosteal implants are placed directly into the jaw, this bone must be healthy enough to support the implant. While some patients may want to invest in a subperiosteal implant instead, there are procedures that can make the jaw stronger.

One option is called a bone augmentation procedure. This involves regenerating healthy bone cells in the jaw. Over time, bone additives and growth factors are going to fortify the jaw, allowing it to act as a sturdy foundation for implants.

Another option is called a sinus lift. Sometimes termed a sinus elevation, this procedure involves adding bone below the sinuses to support upper implants. This procedure is commonly used when someone needs an implant to replace a tooth that is missing in the back.

Finally, the dentist might also recommend something called a ridge expansion. This procedure is used when the width of the jaw is the issue. Bone grafts can be added to create a small ridge along the jaw, allowing it to support an implant.

Dental Implants Are Effective

Dental implants are an effective treatment option for those who are missing one or more teeth. Implants are strong enough to handle every type of food and beverage, improving someone’s quality of life.
